Ports for People Ordinance

Pacific Environment’s “Ports for People” Ordinance seeks to establish provisions and procedures to immediately reduce and eliminate air quality pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions from cargo ships, and achieve a 100% zero-emission standard for cargo shipping by no later than 2040. The ordinance states the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners can catalyze zero-emission shipping by:

  1. Developing incentive programs–including clean air incentives–to protect port communities and workers;
  2. Requiring all new fuel bunkering facilities on port property bunker only zero-emission fuels; and
  3. Be required to reduce air quality pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions from cargo ships by 50% from 2019 levels by 2030 and achieve 100% zero-emission shipping by no later than 2040 at the POLB

The Commissioners have the authority to implement policy at the Port of Long Beach which will provide our port-adjacent communities with some much needed relief from port pollution. On Monday, 2/12, we delivered 200 CSULB student signatures to the Long Beach Harbor Commissioners and port staff and made public comment in favor of the “Ports for People” Ordinance.
