Pacific Environment, Resilient Red Hook, Waterfront Alliance, Friends of the Earth, Environmental Defense Fund and Earthjustice signed a letter to support Int. No. 1143, a bill that could chart the course to 100% zero-emission port operations by 2040. New York City’s port pollution is fueling asthma, cancer and climate change. A transition to 100% zero-emission ports would: protect portside communities, cut carbon emissions and bring $60M/year in public health benefits to Brooklyn alone.
Letter to Council Member Amanda Farías
Today, Pacific Environment, Resilient Red Hook, Waterfront Alliance, Friends of the Earth, Environmental Defense Fund and Earthjustice signed a letter to support Int.
Last December 2024, New York City Council Member Alexa Avilés introduced Int. No. 1143. The bill would would require that the Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability conduct a study in consultation with the city Economic Development Corporation on transitioning all city ports to zero-emission port operations, including whether this can be completed by 2040, the technology and investments required to make such a transition, and whether any additional workforce development would be necessary to complete the transition.
